Birds are the true masters that inspired our ancestors to fly. This talk starts with a discussion of what flight means to birds and how flapping flight allows birds to accomplish great migrations year after year. We will then see how birds fly for less energy than flapping flight by employing simple strategies of soaring flight. Starting from the simplest techniques, we will discuss more complex techniques birds use to fly for less, and for free, and how we can improve aircraft designs.
