2026 marks the 80th anniversary of the first flight of the historic supersonic Bell X-1 displayed in the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum. The Bell X-1 rocket plane launched the era of the X-Planes, experimental U.S. vehicles used to explore and evaluate new technologies and aerodynamic concepts.
