Coffee, donuts and good company on a grass strip in the middle of the Mississippi. Abel Island is a fly-in community north of Guttenberg, and the airstrip runs the length of the island — it is one of the more distinctive places you can put a light aircraft down in the Midwest. The invitation is open to pilots, passengers, families and anyone who just wants to come and look at aeroplanes. Sunday 4 October, 10:00 to 14:00. Flying in: the strip is turf, runway 17​/​35, roughly 2,500 to 2,600 feet depending on the source, with trees and overruns at both ends. CTAF is 122.9 and the pattern is flown to the left. Windsocks sit at the north end and in the southwest corner. Field elevation is 620 feet. Two things worth knowing before you go. Abel Island is a PRIVATE-USE airstrip owned by the Abel Island Association — this event is an open invitation, but a private field is not the same as a public one, so read the invitation as your permission and contact the organisers if anything is unclear.
