We start with a physics-based discussion of the cost of transporting mass from A to B, then develop a metric to use, whether we fly an aircraft or drive. The metric is similar to the CAFE Foundation recommendations, which we will understand from basic principles. We then learn to compare the power level of activities we perform, from flying an airplane to driving or using appliances. We discuss the impact of high​/​low efficiency in relatable terms, with an emphasis on aircraft design.
