Night Witches was a German World War II nickname for the all-female members of Soviet night bombing squadrons. A pilot and navigator flew in a two-seat, open-cockpit, Polikarpov Po-2 biplane, and their first raid was in June 1942. By war's end, three squadrons had completed 24,000 combat missions, with 23 members awarded the Hero of the Soviet Union medal for extraordinary bravery.
