Cornelia Fort was a civilian pilot instructor in the air over Honolulu on December 7, 1941, when the Pearl Harbor attack began. In September 1942, she was the second woman pilot accepted into the U.S. Army's first squadron of female pilots, the Women's Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron, the WAFS. On March 21, 1943, while ferrying a BT-13 from Downey, California, to Dallas, Texas, she was killed in a midair collision, the first woman pilot to die while on active duty.
