AirVenture 2026: Benign and Graveyard Spirals

Wed, Jul 22 · 2:30 PM3:45 PM (Central — Chicago)
Workshop Classroom C, EAA AirVenture, Wittman Regional Airport, Oshkosh, WI 54902

While flying a Schweizer 1-34 over San Francisco Bay, I noticed the aircraft would pilot itself in a spiral, apparently quite stably. This talk follows up that observation. I discuss why the effect might be expected, and present videos showing it from several flights in different aircraft, powered and unpowered, real and simulated. I am continuing to investigate and publicize the phenomenon, with the aim of getting it into the toolbox of every pilot in the world.
