Aircraft Model Overview (Reference only)
The Piper PA-30 Twin Comanche is a sleek and efficient light twin-engine aircraft that became one of Piper’s most successful multi-engine designs. First introduced in the early 1960s, the Twin Comanche was engineered to provide the speed and redundancy of a twin while maintaining operating economics closer to those of high-performance singles. By 1971, the design had matured into a refined and well-regarded cross-country platform.
Powered by twin Lycoming IO-320 engines, each producing approximately 160 horsepower, the 1971 Twin Comanche delivers impressive cruise efficiency and solid climb performance. Its clean low-wing design, retractable landing gear, and streamlined fuselage contribute to strong cruise speeds while keeping fuel consumption comparatively modest for a twin. The aircraft rewards proper engine management and disciplined flying with excellent range and performance.
The cabin typically seats four occupants in a compact but practical layout. While not as spacious as later light twins, the Twin Comanche offers comfortable seating and good visibility for both pilot and passengers. Many aircraft have been upgraded over time with modern avionics, enhancing IFR capability and extending their utility for serious cross-country travel.
Within the general aviation community, the Piper Twin Comanche is often regarded as a “thinking pilot’s twin.” It offers responsive handling and efficient performance but demands proficiency, especially during single-engine operations. Its strong aerodynamic design and relatively light weight make it agile and economical, attributes that continue to attract experienced owner-pilots and multi-engine instructors.
The 1971 Piper Twin Comanche remains a respected aircraft decades after production ended. Its blend of speed, efficiency, and distinctive design ensures its lasting appeal among pilots seeking an economical yet capable light twin with classic lines and proven performance.
