Aircraft Model Overview (Reference only)
The Mooney M20K—commonly known as the Mooney 231 or 252 depending on configuration—is a turbocharged, high-performance single-engine aircraft designed for serious cross-country flying. By 1987, the M20K platform had matured into one of the most capable and efficient turbocharged piston singles in general aviation, offering strong high-altitude performance while maintaining Mooney’s trademark aerodynamic efficiency. Earlier M20K models (231) were powered by the Continental TSIO-360 engine rated at 210 horsepower, while later 252 variants featured refinements including intercooling and improved engine management, increasing rated power to 220 horsepower. The turbocharged system allows the aircraft to maintain sea-level power at altitude, delivering impressive true airspeeds in the flight levels and making it particularly well suited for long-distance travel over terrain and weather systems. True to Mooney design philosophy, the M20K features a laminar-flow wing, retractable landing gear, and a sleek fuselage optimized for speed and efficiency. The cockpit seats four in a compact but purposeful cabin, emphasizing pilot ergonomics and forward visibility. Many 1987 aircraft have since been upgraded with modern avionics, making them highly capable IFR platforms with strong situational awareness. Within the general aviation community, the M20K is often regarded as a “thinking pilot’s turbo.” It rewards proper engine management and altitude planning with excellent cruise speeds and fuel efficiency. Owners appreciate its ability to cruise in the mid-20s while maintaining lower acquisition and operating costs compared to turboprops. The 1987 Mooney M20K remains a respected aircraft in the high-performance turbocharged single category. Its combination of altitude capability, efficiency, and timeless Mooney aerodynamics ensures continued appeal among pilots seeking serious cross-country performance in a piston platform.
Additional Notes
Damage History: 02/26/16 – Aircraft attempted landing on Runway 30 at DFI in Defiance, Ohio. Landing gear would not extend using normal procedures. The pilot attempted the emergency procedure with no success. The aircraft departed the pattern and climbed to an altitude of approximately 3,000 ft. and attempted to troubleshoot the landing gear system with no success. It then returned to DFI, entered the pattern, and completed a "gear-up" landing on Runway 30. There were no injuries to the occupants.
