Engine operations get little attention during flight training, so most pilots try to figure it out on their own. The problem is, very few master this important aspect of flying. This video course features practical engine operation techniques for every phase of flight—from start up to shut down. Aircraft engines vary in size and performance, but the tips covered here are applicable to most general aviation piston engines. Engine monitors are featured extensively in this course, but there are many rule-of-thumb methods that can be done with basic engine gauges. Each technique is demonstrated in detail, step-by-step. Charts and graphs explain the benefits, and how they can help you get the maximum performance and service life from your engine. [Learn from Experience, Not Just Theory] This course is built around real-world tasks that you perform with every flight, from start-up and taxi to climb, cruise, and descent. You'll learn practical techniques for: - Starting, warm-up, and taxiing to minimize wear and prevent common engine issues - Run-up checks to catch spark plug or ignition problems before they become serious - Climb and cruise power management to balance speed, performance, and fuel economy - Leaning for cruise and climb using simple, safe methods that optimize fuel efficiency and engine longevity - Descent and pattern operations to maintain engine health while staying efficient You'll learn the "why" behind each technique—just enough theory for you to understand your engine without being bogged down by technical jargon or unnecessary complexity. [Engine Monitoring Made Simple] With clear guidance on using EGTs, CHTs, fuel flow, and other engine instruments, you’ll learn how to: - Lean for best economy or power without entering the “red box” - Use target EGTs for smooth climbs and consistent performance - Avoid shock cooling and manage cylinder head temperatures - Adjust power and mixture in the pattern and descent for safety and efficiency [Built for Pilots, by Instructors] Created by Ryan Koch at PilotWorkshops, a pilot and instructor with a user’s perspective, this course is designed for the way pilots actually fly. It’s vetted by engine experts but aimed at pilots, not mechanics, so you can put techniques into practice immediately. [What’s included] - Video lessons, showing techniques in action - Lesson review notes to reinforce key points - Review quiz to test your knowledge and help with retention - Completion certificate to document your learning Airplane Engine Operations is available with lifetime access, in the online Sporty’s Pilot Training app or for iOS, Android, and smart TVs.

My CFII said this was a great review for the knowledge and check ride. This is a lifetime course so having this as a tool for review in the future makes this a better choice than a traditional ground school.

I really like it the learn to fly ground school from Sporty's. If I don't feel comfortable with a section I am able to go back and watch it again. The review scrambles the questions so they don't appear in the same order when taking it a second time. I wish in the other document recommendations area it would provided you the text from those areas suggested instead of me having to go to by books. I would be willing to pay more to have it all in one place.

The best IPC refresher I have worked through. The amount of material covered and resources within the course are top notch. With 51 years behind me as a pro pilot & CFII, ASEL & AMEL, I heartly recommend this course!

A very solid course. The G1000 was my first flying experience with a "glass cockpit" and I was concerned about the learning curve during the transition. I was also going through my IPC so it was double pressure. The course did a very good job of introducing me to the concepts of the G1000, what functionality it had and, most importantly, the best workflows for everyday functions and events. Highly recommended.

Very helpful. To be able to pause it for review and then listen to ATC dialogue on the internet as well as direct question to the folks at Sporty's Pilot Shop brought it full circle. Worth the investment!
