Aircraft Model Overview (Reference only)
The Piper PA-24-250 Comanche is a sleek, high-performance piston single that helped establish the Comanche series as one of the most efficient cross-country aircraft of its era. Introduced in the late 1950s, the PA-24-250 was developed as a more powerful evolution of the earlier Comanche models, offering increased speed and improved long-range capability. Powering the PA-24-250 is the Lycoming O-540 engine, producing 250 horsepower. This provides strong climb performance and allows the aircraft to cruise in the ~150–160 knot range, making it competitive with many higher-powered aircraft of its time. Combined with its retractable landing gear and clean aerodynamic design, the Comanche 250 delivers excellent performance with relatively efficient fuel consumption. A defining feature of the Comanche series is its laminar-flow wing and streamlined fuselage, which contribute to its reputation for speed and efficiency. The aircraft’s design prioritizes aerodynamic cleanliness, allowing it to achieve impressive range—often 800–1,000 nautical miles, depending on configuration and fuel capacity. The cabin typically seats four occupants and offers a practical layout for personal travel. While the interior is more compact compared to larger aircraft, it provides sufficient comfort for cross-country missions. Many PA-24-250 aircraft have been upgraded with modern avionics, extending their usefulness as capable IFR platforms. Within the general aviation community, the Comanche 250 is often viewed as a “classic fast cruiser”—valued for its ability to cover long distances efficiently. It requires proper systems knowledge and disciplined operation, but rewards experienced pilots with strong performance and fuel economy. The Piper PA-24-250 Comanche remains a respected and sought-after aircraft today. Its combination of aerodynamic efficiency, solid performance, and timeless design continues to appeal to pilots seeking a capable and classic cross-country airplane.
