TL Ultralight Sting

Aircraft Model Overview (Reference only)

The TL Ultralight Sting Sport is a two-seat, single-engine light sport aircraft designed and manufactured by TL Ultralight s.r.o. of Hradec Králové, Czech Republic one of the most experienced and prolific manufacturers in the European ultralight and LSA market. Introduced to the U.S. market following the FAA's establishment of the Light Sport Aircraft category in 2004, the Sting Sport was among the early SLSA certifications and quickly developed a strong reputation among sport pilots and flight schools for its composite construction quality, handling characteristics, and performance figures that approach the ceiling of the LSA envelope. The 2006 model year represents the Sting Sport in its original production configuration, before the subsequent Sting S4 revision that refined the wing and landing gear design. Power is provided by a Rotax 912 ULS four-cylinder horizontally-opposed engine producing 100 horsepower at 5,800 RPM, driving a two-blade Woodcomp or Duc Hélices ground-adjustable or constant-speed propeller depending on the specific aircraft's configuration. The Rotax 912 ULS is the predominant powerplant in the LSA category and enjoys the most comprehensive support network of any LSA engine in North America a meaningful practical advantage for owners operating away from major aviation centers. Fuel burn is typically 5.0 to 5.5 USG per hour at cruise power, delivering operating economics that are among the lowest of any FAA-certificated powered aircraft. The Sting Sport airframe is an all-composite construction glass fiber and carbon fiber sandwich panels over a structural foam core providing a high strength-to-weight ratio that allows the aircraft to achieve its performance figures within the 1,320 lb gross weight constraint of the LSA category. The low-wing monoplane configuration with a T-tail empennage is aerodynamically efficient and gives the Sting Sport a sleek, modern profile that distinguishes it visually from tube-and-fabric or aluminum LSA contemporaries. The retractable tricycle landing gear a feature uncommon in the LSA segment and a notable Sting Sport differentiator contributes directly to the aircraft's high cruise speed within the LSA envelope. The two-seat side-by-side cabin is well-appointed for the category, with a wide bubble canopy providing exceptional forward and upward visibility and a cabin width comparable to many certified single-engine training aircraft. The ergonomics are sport aircraft in character low seating position, close instrument panel, and a purposeful feel that appeals to pilots drawn to higher-performance flying within the sport pilot framework. Control harmony is well-regarded across operator reviews, with light and responsive handling in all axes and good stability for cross-country VFR navigation. Entry and exit are via the hinged forward canopy, which lifts as a single unit. The Sting Sport competes in the upper tier of the LSA market alongside the Czech Sport Aircraft SportCruiser, Evektor SportStar, and Pipistrel Virus where buyers are primarily motivated by cruise performance, build quality, and handling rather than acquisition cost alone. TL Ultralight's reputation for composite quality is strong in the European market and has carried over to North American operators. The type is supported by TL Sport Aircraft, the U.S. importer and service network, with parts availability generally described as adequate but dependent on import lead times for major structural or system components. For sport pilots, private pilots seeking a low-cost sport flying platform, or flight schools building an LSA training fleet, the 2006 TL Ultralight Sting Sport offers a capable, well-built, and genuinely enjoyable aircraft that maximizes what the LSA category permits. Its retractable gear and composite construction deliver a cruise performance and aesthetic that sit at the top of the sport pilot accessible segment, and its Rotax 912 ULS powerplant ensures straightforward maintenance and fuel economy across its operational life.
