Aberdeen Flying Service, Inc. - Flight School
Aberdeen Flying Service, Inc. (AFS) is a full-service fixed-base operator and flight school based at Aberdeen Regional Airport (KABR) in Aberdeen, South Dakota. Founded in 1946 and now in its third generation of family ownership, AFS is one of the oldest and most established aviation operations in the Northern Plains. The business is currently led by President Mark Caven, Director of Operations Charlie Caven, and Janna Caven — a family-run operation with nearly eight decades of uninterrupted service to the Aberdeen community and the broader region. AFS is considerably more than a flight school. The operation spans charter aviation (Part 135), air cargo, aircraft maintenance, FBO services, car rental franchising, and pilot training under one roof. Charter flights cover the U.S. and Canada 24/7/365, with pilots and aircraft also based in Bismarck, ND and Watertown, SD, extending the company's regional reach. Cargo charter services support time-sensitive freight operations throughout the Northern Plains corridor. On the flight training side, AFS offers instruction from introductory discovery flights through the full professional certificate pathway: Private Pilot, Instrument Rating, Commercial Pilot, Multi-Engine Rating, CFI, CFII, and MEI. Training is conducted under Part 61 with a flexible, student-paced approach suited to both recreational pilots and those pursuing aviation careers. Ground school is offered alongside flight instruction, with recommended study materials including the Sporty's Private Pilot ground course. AFS holds an FAA Part 145 Repair Station certification and has earned the FAA Diamond Award for maintenance excellence — a recognition reserved for organizations achieving the highest standards in aviation maintenance safety and training. The maintenance department is factory-certified with Honeywell TPE331-certified technicians on staff, and capabilities extend to engine changes and rigging, prop replacement and balancing, corrosion control, custom fabrication, camera hole installations, AOG support, insurance repair assessments, and pre-purchase inspections. FAA DAR (Designated Airworthiness Representative) and DER (Designated Engineering Representative) services are also available on-site. The maintenance team can travel to the aircraft's location for on-site work.

Home Airport(s)
Aberdeen Regional Airport ICAO: KABR | IATA: ABR | FAA LID: ABR Located approximately two miles east of downtown Aberdeen in Brown County, South Dakota. The airport covers 1,284 acres and sits at an elevation of 1,301–1,302 ft MSL. It is capable of handling aircraft as large as a Boeing 737-900 or Airbus A321, and currently receives Delta Connection regional jet service (operated by SkyWest Airlines) to Minneapolis/St. Paul. Approach and departure services are provided by Minneapolis ARTCC on remote frequencies. Runways: Runway 13/31 — 6,901 ft × 100 ft (concrete; primary; ILS/LOC and MALSR for Runway 31; RNAV/GPS both ends; HIRL; PAPI both ends) Runway 17/35 — 5,500 ft × 100 ft (asphalt; RNAV/GPS both ends; MIRL; REIL on Runways 17 and 35; PAPI both ends) Full-time ATC tower. Class D airspace. For flight training, KABR offers an outstanding environment across all stages of instruction. The combination of a 6,900-foot primary runway and a 5,500-foot crosswind runway gives student pilots diverse wind and runway options for pattern work, crosswind training, and practice approaches. The controlled Class D environment ensures students develop consistent ATC communication skills from the start, while the ILS and multiple RNAV approaches on both runways provide a rich instrument training infrastructure for advanced students. The Northern Plains climate is one of the most genuinely challenging flight training environments in the country — students here encounter hard winters with icing, low IMC, blowing snow, and significant crosswinds across the open prairie, which builds a level of weather discipline and real-world decision-making rarely matched at sunnier training locations. South Dakota's flat agricultural terrain provides excellent VFR visibility and consistent landmarks for primary cross-country training. The airport's commercial service component, handling both airline and active GA traffic, means students develop situational awareness in a mixed-use, operationally serious environment.

Fleet and Facilities
Cessna 152 — Primary two-seat trainer; used for Private Pilot initial training. Economical per-hour cost and simple systems make it the standard entry-level platform. Cessna 172 (multiple variants) — Four-seat trainer used from Private Pilot through Instrument Rating and Commercial training. AFS has historically operated multiple 172 variants including the 172N, 172R, 172RG Cutlass (retractable gear), and 172S, providing options across capability levels and training requirements. Cessna 210 / T210 — Single-engine retractable high-performance aircraft; used for high-performance and complex endorsements and commercial training. Cessna 310R — Twin-engine piston aircraft; used for Multi-Engine Rating, instrument training, and commercial multi-engine instruction. AFS has historically operated a wide range of aircraft beyond primary trainers, including Cessna 340A, 402C, 404, 414A, 441 Conquest, T303 Crusader, TR182, Piper PA-28R Arrow, and Piper PA-44 Seminole across its charter and training fleet. Current active training aircraft should be confirmed directly with AFS as fleet composition evolves. On-site FBO facilities include heated and cold aircraft storage, full fuel service (100LL self-serve 24/7 and full-service during business hours, plus Jet-A with volume discounts and contract fuel programs), catering, crew cars, conference rooms, a pilot flight planning office, and student study areas. AFS is also the Aberdeen franchise for Hertz, Thrifty, and Dollar Rent a Car, with vehicles available ramp-side. UNICOM 122.775 for line service.
Additional Notes
Aberdeen Flying Service's depth of history — operating continuously since 1946 through three generations of the Caven family — gives it a standing in the South Dakota aviation community that goes well beyond what any newer school can replicate. The operation's longevity has also produced a maintenance capability that is genuinely rare for a regional FBO: factory certifications, DAR/DER services, and the FAA Diamond Award place AFS in a tier of maintenance excellence typically associated with much larger aviation businesses. For student pilots considering AFS, the Northern Plains training environment is both a challenge and an advantage. Winter training in South Dakota is not for the faint of heart — but pilots who earn their certificates here graduate with a practical familiarity with adverse weather, wind, and instrument conditions that sets them apart in the broader market. The school's multi-generational family identity also means students are unlikely to encounter the anonymity common at larger academies; the operation is small enough that instructors know their students personally. The school's recommended study materials reference Sporty's private pilot ground course, and the pricing PDF notes that student costs may vary with weather and scheduling variability — an honest acknowledgment of the seasonal realities of flying in South Dakota.
